Jimmy John's is releasing a unique fast food sandwich — and I tried it first

Everyone knows Jimmy John's is “insanely fresh” and “insanely fast,” but did you know the sandwich chain is? freaky also trendy? In 2023, Jimmy John's created an entry-level jacket that reeks of 90s retro fashion and made us want to buy it immediately. Then, earlier this year, the company tapped into the fiery menu trend with its Firecracker range, complete with new packaging and potato chips.

Now the world's love of dill pickles is being met with an all-new, unique fast food sandwich you'll definitely want to try.

Jimmy John's new picklewich sandwiches

Jimmy John's is releasing a new picklewich that's different than any other sandwich on its menu. Why? Because instead of bread, two halves of a huge kosher dill pickle are used for the “sandwich”.

The new Picklewich will come to the menu in two variants: Vito and Turkey & Provolone. The Vito consists of a hollowed-out dill pickle filled with salami, capocollo, provolone, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, sauce and herbs. And “Turkey & Provolone” is a gutted dill pickle stuffed with turkey, provolone, lettuce, tomato and onion.

Jimmy John's Picklewich was likely inspired by the pickle sandwich from Long Island store Seven Brothers Gourmet Food Market that went viral on TikTok over the summer. This sandwich also included a hollowed-out cucumber filled with cured meats, cheese, bacon and a few other toppings.

Jimmy John's

Now pickle lovers no longer have to travel to New York to try the salty dill sandwich because Jimmy John's is bringing the picklewich to menus nationwide. You'll be able to order the picklewiches in restaurants from October 28th – with insanely fast delivery – although you'll have to try them soon as the sandwiches are only on the menu until November 14th.

In addition to the pickle sandwiches, Jimmy John's is bringing back its fan-favorite Pickle Jimmy Chips for a limited time. Whether paired with a picklewich or your favorite order, the savory dill-flavored chips are a must when they return to menus.

I recently tried the new Turkey & Provolone Picklewich and Pickle Jimmy Chips early and here is my honest review.

My honest review

As a pickle lover myself, I really understand the hype surrounding all things salty, briny, and dill-flavored. I will always ask, “Are you going to eat your pickle?” when I'm out with someone and definitely agree to an order of fried pickles.

For this reason, I was excited to try the new Picklewich, as I believe a pickle can make or break a sandwich. My only fear about trying the picklewich was that the brine would make it very messy and maybe a little too wet.

I tried the Turkey & Provolone Picklewich, which is a little similar to my favorite Jimmy John's order, the Club Lulu, just without the bacon or mayonnaise. The first thing I noticed was that the picklewich is pretty small compared to a regular sub, but it makes sense when you think about the size of a pickle.

The cucumber sandwich is tightly wrapped in paper, which you must wear while eating so that the innards do not fall out and your hands get wet with brine. The flavors were delicious, which was no surprise to me. If you're a pickle fan, a turkey and cheese sandwich with extra pickles will of course be delicious.

My only concerns were what I expected: the sandwich was incredibly messy. With the salty juices dripping out and the meat trying to push out the back of the sandwich when I took a bite, the picklewich was a little difficult to eat. Also, I love Jimmy John's fresh bread, so I kind of missed it. Overall, however, the picklewich was tasty and a much tastier option for those who can't eat bread and are tired of lettuce wraps.

Will it replace my favorite Jimmy John's order? No, but I think I'll add a Jimmy Pickle directly to my sandwiches from now on instead of eating it on the side. With that in mind, I really want to try the Vito Picklewich, as the meat-filled sandwich seems to have a little more to offer than the Turkey & Provolone.

The Pickle Jimmy Chips are perhaps the best dill pickle potato chips I have ever tasted. They are spicy and have a fresh dill flavor that is hard to find in many commercial potato chips. So, Jimmy John's, if you would like to keep these on the menu forever, I would be very grateful.
