Helen Mirren's bizarre Kurt Cobain quote goes viral

Legendary actress Helen Mirren has spoken out about late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, but the way she addressed the singer has caught social media attention and her quote is now going viral.

Cobain's legacy has been explored by various musicians and entertainers over the years. The impact he made in such a short space of time is rarely mentioned. Cobain died in 1994 at the age of 27, leaving many wondering what else could have happened to the legendary Nirvana frontman.

Join the queue for Mirren, whose credits include The Queen, Gosford Park, Red And The fate of the angry. In a recent interview, she reflected on another observation regarding Cobain, which is why her comment garnered so much attention.

What Helen Mirren said about Kurt Cobain

In a discussion about aging in the entertainment industry, Mirren began by noting, “If you're lucky, you get older. And then there you are. Oh my God, I'm 79! I never thought I would live to be 79. And then you say, “Okay, that's it.” That's 79. And it's kind of okay. It’s not brilliant, but it wasn’t that brilliant being 25 either.”

But Mirren's commentary on aging didn't stop there. Speaking to the Evening Standard, she continued: “I always say it's so sad that Kurt Cobain died right then because he never got to see GPS.” It's the most beautiful thing, my little bruise on the road runs along. I just think it’s absolutely magical and incredible.”

So often we think about “what might have been” regarding Cobain's career, but the objective consideration of how Cobain missed the innovations of the last 30 years, like GPS, isn't often entertained.

What else did Helen Mirren wonder about Kurt Cobain?

Apparently Mirren thought a lot about what Cobain missed after his death in 1994. In previous interviews, she has used the Nirvana frontman as an example to reflect on aging and the evolution of technology over time.

In 2014, she once told Oprah Winfrey, “Look at Kurt Cobain – he's barely seen a computer!” The digital things that are going on there are so exciting. I’m just so curious to see what happens next.”

Staying on the computer trend, Mirren told Cosmopolitan in 2015, “I was thinking about Kurt Cobain the other day and he died without knowing anything about the internet and that totally blew me away.”

She also used Cobain as an example to talk about the arrival of the internet in a chat with The Daily Mail in 2016. “If I had died at 27, the age Kurt Cobain died in 1994, I would never have known there was an internet! “Incredible things happen all the time and I can't wait to see what's next,” she commented.

The surprising nature of the comments leaves much to be clarified. It's cool to think that a legend like 79-year-old Dame Helen Mirren recognizes the talents of the late Kurt Cobain, who would have been 57 if he were still alive. It's a great entertainment of a generation and a different form of entertainment, mentioning another iconic talent.

But the way she keeps using Cobain as a reference when talking about aging and innovation just feels a little strange. And it makes you curious about what she might have thought about Cobain and his music, beyond using him as a reference point.
