Matthew Sweet, alt-rocker known for '90s hit “Girlfriend,” suffers “stressful” stroke while on tour

Singer-songwriter Matthew Sweet suffered a “stressful” stroke while on tour in Toronto this month, his manager confirmed Wednesday.

To help with restoration costs, Sweet's management company, Russell Carter Artist Management, launched a GoFundMe page this week.

“He is now on a long, difficult road to recovery,” Russell Carter said in a statement. “He won’t be able to perform for the foreseeable future.”

Sweet, 60, best known for '90s alternative rock hits like “Girlfriend” and “I've Been Waiting,” has no “insurance or touring income,” the site says .

Catherine Lyons, who represents Sweet for Russell Carter Artist Management and organized the fundraiser, wrote in the GoFundMe page description that “the doctors and hospital care in Toronto were instrumental in saving Matthew's life, but health care is for Americans in Canada not free.”

Sweet will have to be flown back to the United States on a medical transport plane with medical personnel on board and then spend six weeks in a specialized rehabilitation center “where he will receive around-the-clock care and therapy,” Lyons said. She added that months of treatment and rehabilitation would follow, estimating the total cost of Sweet's care at “close to a quarter of a million dollars.”

“Please donate financially if you can,” she wrote. “Matthew will be forever grateful.”

As of Wednesday morning, the fund had raised over $150,000 from around 2,700 donors, including notable names like director Judd Apatow, musician John Mayer and REM guitarist Peter Buck.

“Matthew has always been extremely focused and persistent in all of his endeavors – not only in his musical career, but in all of his artistic and intellectual pursuits,” Carter said. “I am confident that his trademark determination will serve him well as he now focuses on his recovery to good health.”

Sweet canceled more than a month of shows this month due to health concerns, he said on Instagram. At the time, he had been opening for Hanson's '90s peers and was preparing for his own headlining gigs.

“Due to a medical illness and on the advice of a doctor, Matthew Sweet must cancel all remaining upcoming shows with Hanson and his own headlining dates from October 10th to November 16th,” the post reads.

Sweet has recorded over a dozen albums since releasing his first album, “Inside,” in 1986. His most recent was 2021’s “Catspaw.”
