Colorado cardiologist sentenced to more than 150 years in prison for sexual assault and drug crimes

DENVER (KKTV) – A Colorado cardiologist was sentenced Friday to 158 years in prison for numerous sexual assaults and drug crimes.

According to our sister station CBS Colorado, cardiologist Stephen Matthews has been convicted of eight sexual assaults.

Matthews was charged after he met women on dating apps, drugged 10 of them and sexually assaulted eight of them, CBS Colorado said. He was found guilty of assaulting another victim (11 victims in total).

According to CBS Colorado, several victims shared their stories and experiences with Matthews during the court hearing.

“What happened to me that afternoon left me scarred,” said one victim. “I have been in therapy for 18 months. Stephen Matthews made me feel normal.”

CBS Colorado said applause could be heard throughout the Denver courtroom when Matthews' conviction was announced. He was found guilty in August on almost all of the sexual assault charges he was accused of.
