Another deadly crime: St. Paul man paroled for 2008 murder, charged on warrant with shooting his pregnant wife

A St. Paul man who was paroled for a 2008 murder has now been charged on a warrant in connection with a fatal Oct. 19 shooting that killed his pregnant wife and a carjacking and shooting in the closeness that took place a short time later.

Mychel Allen Stowers, 36, was charged with second-degree murder, second-degree murder of an unborn child, two counts of first-degree auto theft and two counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.

According to the criminal complaint, officers were called to the 100 block of Sycamore Street East at approximately 9:08 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19, for a shooting at an apartment.

When they arrived, officers said they noticed gun residue in the air as they entered the apartment. Inside, they found a woman, later identified as Damara Alexis Stowers, 35, lying on the floor in a bedroom with five bullet casings on the floor. A short time later, she was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by paramedics, according to the indictment.

Prosecutors told 5 EYEWTNESS NEWS the woman was the suspect's wife. Court records show they had filed for divorce, but it had not yet been finalized.

Officers also found ultrasound images and a loaded pistol magazine elsewhere in the apartment.

According to the charges, the owner of the apartment building spoke to officers and told them that Mychel lived with Damara but was threatened with eviction because he was not on the lease.

Six minutes after the call about the apartment shooting, officers responded to a call about a nearby carjacking in the 90 block of Acker Street, just 0.1 miles from the apartment building, where they found a man on the ground with a gunshot wound, according to the complaint Leg. The man was taken to hospital with a broken femur. His car was also stolen.

Another man was with the shooting victim at the time of the crime and told officers that the suspect also tried to shoot him but missed. He then ran home, but the suspect stole the victim's Audi, which had his phone in it, because the men had gone to the store together, court records say.

While speaking with officers at the hospital, the victim said the Audi was driving with his keys in it as he went to throw trash in the parking lot. He was smoking a cigarette when a stocky black man, later identified as Mychel, said something to the victim that he did not understand due to a language barrier and then shot him. He said the suspect left the scene but then came back and stole his car, the charges say.

Officers found two casings at the scene.

Surveillance video from a nearby church corroborated the victim's statement and showed a person approaching the victim, standing next to his car and pointing something at him, a flash and then the victim falling to the ground. It also showed Mychel running away, but then returning and driving off in the Audi. Two shots could be heard in the audio of a video.

The complaint states that Mychel called the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office and said he wanted to turn himself in because he had just shot a man on Acker Street, but had not done so as of Oct. 25, and in According to the charges, there is an arrest warrant against him.

According to the charges, Mychel was released from prison on parole on March 28 for the 2008 killing of a man. According to Justice Department information, he was living in temporary housing due to his work release and had received permission to visit Damara at her residence.
