Francesco Bagnaia unimpressed by the MotoGP standings: “20 points is not a big difference”

Francesco Bagnaia is not impressed by his 20-point gap to Jorge Martin in the 2024 MotoGP championship standings, as it is “no longer a big gap”.

After finishing third behind Martin in Australia last weekend, Martin opened up a 20-point lead over Bagnaia with three rounds to go, starting with the Thai Grand Prix.

Depending on how the Buriram weekend goes – with last year's Thai GP being one of the strongest rounds of the year for the Pramac rider – Martin could head to Malaysia next week for his first chance to win the 2024 title.

But Bagnaia – who overcame a 91-point deficit to win the 2022 championship – does not see his current 20-point deficit as a problem in the modern sprint era.

“It's different,” he began when asked about being the overall chaser in Buriram on Thursday.

“Three years ago, two years ago, when you arrived with 20 points with three races to go, it was more critical than now, when you can get 12 more points every weekend.

“So it's a little different. It's like we're seeing right now: it's easy to win a lot and lose a lot.

“Three years ago it was different and now 20 points is not a big gap.

“But in any case it’s 20 points and I have to improve. If you want to win, you have to do more.”

He added: “I’m feeling the same as always. It's the fourth season in a row that I'm fighting for the championship.

“It’s true that I lost three races from the end in 2021 and have always been behind or ahead in the last two seasons.

“So for me the strategy is the same, so I have to prepare well for the weekend.

“The pressure is the same whether you are the leader or the hunter; It's the risk that changes a little. But I think I’ll do it the same way I always do.”
