Live Updates: Israel attacks Iran as war rages in Gaza and Lebanon

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israel's recent attacks on Iran had severely damaged its defense capabilities, without providing details on the targets.

In his first comments on the attacks, Netanyahu said Israel had promised to respond decisively to the Iranian missile attack earlier this month.

“In the early hours of Saturday, we kept our promise and severely damaged Iran’s defense capability and its ability to produce missiles that work against us,” Netanyahu said.

“Yesterday we hit the octopus’ head. To the Iranian people I say: our fight against a tyrannical regime that threatens the entire region. Whoever hurts us, we hurt them.”

Netanyahu thanked the U.S. for its “close coordination and support” in the IDF attacks on Iran and said the attack “achieved all of its objectives.”

Biden administration officials said the US was not directly involved in the attack but consulted closely with Israel.

Some context: Iran said Israel attacked military facilities across the country on Saturday morning, causing “limited damage” in some areas.

Israel “attacked parts of military centers in Tehran, Khuzestan and Ilam provinces,” state news agency IRNA reported, adding that “the attack was successfully intercepted and repelled by Iran's 'integrated air defense system'.”
