'Here for a reason' – Alyssa Thompson re-introduces herself to USWNT as teenager shows why she should be in Emma Hayes' plans

The teenager made her World Cup debut but her performance in the friendly against Iceland showed she is ready for more

Ahead of the 2023 World Cup, Alyssa Thompson was introduced to the world. In January of this year, she was selected by Angel City after a series of pre-draft decisions, making her one of the most expensive acquisitions in NWSL history. Her rise was also international. After making her debut in 2022, she was a full member of the U.S. Women's National Team for the 2023 Women's World Cup, where she played on the biggest stage down under at just 18 years old.

The next summer it seemed as if the world had moved on. Stars emerged and the USWNT ushered in a new era buoyed by three shots of espresso. Thompson was not among the 18 players named to the USWNT's Olympic squad. She wasn't one of the deputies either.

After her career breakthrough in 2023, it became clear in 2024 that nothing was guaranteed. Like almost everyone else in the pool, Thompson had to fight back.

With a swing of her foot, Thompson showed she was here to stay. Despite all the talent around her, Thompson provided a moment that showed she can be on the same level. By scoring her first international goal in the USWNT's 3-1 win over Iceland on Thursday night, Thompson once again showed herself to the world and offered a glimpse of the potential that lies at her feet.

She's still working on fulfilling that potential, but after a minor setback, Thompson has delivered. At just 19 years old, it feels like she's just getting started, and with three years until the next World Cup, Thompson wants to prove herself again.
