Death of Dick Pope: Tom Hardy pays tribute to 'lovable friend' as cameraman dies aged 77

Tom Hardy led the tributes following the death of British cinematographer Dick Pope aged 77.

The news was confirmed in a statement from the British Society of Cinematographers on Tuesday (October 22).

Pope was best known for his collaboration with director Mike Leigh, with whom he worked on 11 films, among other things Life is sweet, nakedAnd Secrets and lies. He was recognized for his extremely subtle filmmaking style and his appreciation for natural light, which worked well with the themes and aesthetics of the film “Leigh's Kitchen Sink.”

He was nominated for two Oscars for his work on Neil Burger's film The illusionist in 2006 and Leigh's Mr. Turner in 2014. His most recent credit is for his work with Leigh on Hard truthswhich will be released in January 2025.

“It is with deep sadness that we learn of the death of our friend and colleague Dick Pope BSC,” the BSC statement said.

“Dick had a reputation for being a wonderful collaborator and passionate about the art form of cinematography. He was passionate about embracing new technologies and ideas while ensuring that the skills and craftsmanship of those who came before him were not lost.”

In a tribute on his Instagram page, Hardy wrote: “Dick Pope, British cinematographer, loving friend and all-round legend. August 1947 [to] October 2024.”

Industry professionals shared their memories of the industry professional when film journalist Nick Newman wrote: “I interviewed Dick Pope at Camerimage a few times over the years and never forgot how charismatic, incisive and friendly he was, the kind of person who pauses.” a publicist because he wanted to continue talking to me. Fellow cameraman Steven Hall, who has worked on films, among other things Tom & Jerry, Fury, And The imitation game, wrote: “It makes me very sad to read about the death of Dick Pope. I never worked with him, but I got to know him socially and he was a really nice guy. He had a unique ability to shape the look of a film so that it wasn’t about the camera, but about what was happening in the frame.”

Pope's other films include Philomena with Judi Dench and Steve Coogan (2013), Peterloo with Rory Kinnear and Maxine Peake (2018) and film from 2004 Vera Drake with Imelda Staunton.

Pope is survived by his wife, Pat.
