Warren man arrested after police chase

BARRE, Vt. (WCAX) – A wanted Warren man is facing multiple charges after police say he led them on a chase Tuesday night and struck an officer with his car.

It happened around 11:30 p.m. Barre police said they attempted to stop a car for speeding on Route 62, but the driver, later identified as John Balch, 34, led officers on a chase.

After getting stuck in a lawn on a dead-end street, Balch rammed a patrol car, striking another officer and knocking him to the ground, according to police. The officer was treated at Central Vermont Medical Center and released.

According to police, Balch crashed nearby and fled on foot before being arrested. Numerous charges have been brought against him, including gross negligence and assault on a police officer. According to police, he was also wanted on a $20,000 arrest warrant for a home invasion in Berlin in 2023.
