What is Daylight Saving Time?

Daylight saving time is when “daylight” begins an hour later in the morning and lasts an hour longer in the evening, according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

This allows the daylight hour to be coordinated with the time when most people are active outside. Daylight saving time is intended to save energy because in the warmer months the majority of people spend time outside rather than at home, which saves energy.

When is the shortest day of the year in 2024?

The shortest day of the year marks the winter solstice, the first day of winter. This year it falls on Saturday, December 21, 2024.
