“Bob's Burgers” voice actor Jay Johnston will be sentenced to one year in prison for his role on January 6th

A former voice actor for the animated comedy “Bob's Burgers” who was convicted of a felony for his role in the riots at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, was sentenced Monday to one year and one day in prison.

Jay Johnston, 56, pleaded guilty in July to felony interfering with police officers after videos showed him helping rioters push against a police barricade during one of the most violent clashes between police and the pro-Trump mafia on that day Day in the Lower West Terrace Tunnel.

Prosecutors sought an 18-month sentence for Johnston, citing in large part his apparent lack of remorse and his refusal to accept responsibility for his actions that day.

For example, they pointed to an image showing Johnston dressing up as a so-called “QAnon shaman” at a Halloween party two years after the attack on the Capitol.

Before taking part in the riots, Johnston had a long career as an actor in comedies, including roles in “Mr. Show,” “Arrested Development” and “The Sarah Silverman Program” – all before he was cast on the Fox animated series “Bob's Burgers” as Jimmy Pesto Sr.

At his sentencing hearing on Monday, Johnston's family members spoke about how since he was identified for his role in the attack on the Capitol, he has been banned from future acting roles and “pushed out” of Hollywood.

Johnston briefly addressed the court before his sentence was announced by D.C. District Judge Carl Nichols, accepting responsibility for his role in the attack, which he called “reprehensible.”

In handing down his sentence, Judge Nichols referred to Johnston's successful acting career and said it was “all the more inexplicable and disturbing” that he had taken part in the events at the Lower West Tunnel.
