Wrongful death lawsuit dismissed following death of Neillsville man in 2019

EAU CLAIRE COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU) – A wrongful death lawsuit is being dismissed following the death of a Neillsville man who was shot and killed by law enforcement in 2019.

In June 2022, family members of Tyler Meier, who was shot and killed in March 2019, filed a lawsuit in Eau Claire County Circuit Court against Eau Claire County, the City of Augusta, members of the Eau Claire County Sheriff's Department and Augusta Police Department.

According to court records, the lawsuit was dismissed on October 15, 2024.

Meier, 46, died March 2, 2019, on Kempton Road about halfway between Augusta and Fairchild in the town of Fairchild after being shot by law enforcement.

The lawsuit said Meier suffered from a mental disability, including a diagnosed anxiety disorder, and tried to escape the situation, but police followed Meier, angering him even more.

The lawsuit alleged that law enforcement acted “maliciously and negligently” to cause Meier’s anxiety and mental health crisis.
