After almost a month without rain, the New York area is under warning

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued another red flag warning for the New York City area until 7 p.m. Saturday.

So far there has been no rain in the city for 26 days, posing a high risk of wildfires.

Officials advise against burning outdoors and to be cautious about activities that could start a fire.

Danger of forest fires

As bone-dry conditions continue to prevail across the region, authorities remain concerned that new wildfires could spread quickly.

On Friday, crews worked to extinguish several wildfires in the region, including a fire in Rockaway Township, Morris County.

Drought on the East Coast

“We need some rain,” he said FOX 5 NY Meteorologist Liv Johnson. “If this drought continues, we could see one of the driest months on record.”

Meanwhile, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy recently issued a drought warning urging residents and businesses to conserve water as the drought continues.

In one press release, Officials said the state has experienced “significantly below-average rainfall over the past three months, which has contributed to declines in stream flow, reservoir and groundwater levels.”

What to do during a Red Flag Warning, according to the NWS

1. Avoid outdoor burns: Stay away from fire pits and grills.

2. Safety equipment: Keep flammable materials safe.

3. Report fires immediately: Contact emergency services if you notice smoke or flames.

4. Stay informed: Keep an eye on local weather reports for changes in fire danger.

As the drought continues, community vigilance is essential.

City officials are actively monitoring the situation and hope rain will ease the drought and reduce the fire threat.

Until then, New Yorkers are urged to remain vigilant and prepared to stay safe during this critical time.
