AMD Ryzen 9800X3D leak shows it runs at 5.6GHz on all cores - could this be the CPU that kills Intel in PC gaming? • stonescape

AMD's Ryzen 7 9800X3D has impressive potential for fine-tuning to breathtaking performance levels, or that's the latest rumor (among many) surrounding the soon-to-be-launched Zen 5 processor.

Wccftech has noticed that Igor Kavinski leaked some benchmark results for the Ryzen 9800X3D on the Anandtech forums. These come complete with CPU-Z details on clock speeds and notes on the processor configuration used to achieve the revealing boost clock shown – namely just over 5.6GHz on all eight cores.

The Ryzen 9800X3D (probably a pre-release engineering sample chip) was brought to this level using Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) and Curve Optimizer (CO), as well as a number of other manual CPU tweaks by Kavinski. We assume that the cooler used was also high-end performance, which explains everything that it reaches 5.6 GHz, which is quite remarkable for all processor cores.

To put it in perspective, the 9800X3D's rumored all-core boost out of the box is 5.2GHz (without tuning), although that's still a fair bit faster than the 7800X3D (at 4.8GHz).

The benchmarks shown are from Cinebench R23 and the Ryzen 9800X3D performs well here too, with a score of 2,261 in single-core and 25,258 in multi-core. As Wccftech points out, the Ryzen 7800X3D is typically between 18,000 and 19,000 on the latter, suggesting that this (heavily upgraded) 9800X3D could be a good 30% faster when it comes to non-gaming performance.

As far as games go, this is a Final Fantasy We don't have any comparisons there for the 7800X3D, but the general reaction to the result is that it's once again impressive – as you'd expect from the refresh done here.

Analysis: Trying to guess the actual generational upswing

Of course, we have to keep firmly in mind that not every Ryzen 9800X3D buyer will go to the lengths that Kavinski did here – many didn't either – and there are unknowns like the cooling setup and how fancy it was. Therefore, the benchmark leaks must be interpreted with a healthy dose of skepticism, but just the sight of the all-core boost reaching this high is promising.

Looking at the gains here, we can assume (read: assume) that out of the box – with stock cooling and no CPU tuning – the 9800X3D could be around 10%, or possibly up to 15%, faster than the 7800X3D Gaming. And even more for everyday use outside of PC gaming – because this isn't the only leak that suggests that the X3D's overall performance has been significantly beefed up with Zen 5. Especially because AMD has apparently solved the problem that clock speeds are slowed down by this 3D V-cache on the 9800X3D (and therefore also on the other X3D chips for Zen 5 when they arrive later).

We can certainly be broadly optimistic about a decent performance boost, both in gaming and overall, considering we're (supposedly) getting quite a boost in clock speeds, plus the Zen 5 X3D generation gains to boot. (Although some other leaks have revealed a more dire situation – spills should be treated with caution in our opinion).

Whatever the generation's ultimate performance upgrade ends up being, the other important part of the equation will be price – will the 9800X3D retail for $449 (in the US and relatively elsewhere) like its predecessor? Or will AMD charge a little less? The latter is probably taking the optimism too far, but the point remains that any performance increase we get with the 9800X3D must of course be viewed through the lens of MSRP.

AMD has confirmed that the Ryzen 9000X3D will launch on November 7, 2024 – all rumors point to it just being the Ryzen 9800X3D CPU, which may be revealed in just a few days. The 9800X3D is of course eagerly awaited as the successor to the justifiably popular 7800X3D (which has now all but disappeared from shelves), in the hope that it will wash away some of the bad taste that the introduction of the Ryzen 9000 brings with it brings links (at least in the mouths of PC gamers).
