Jeep crashes into horse-drawn carriage in central New York, killing mother and injuring her little girl

TOWN OF NEWPORT, N.Y. — A mother is dead and her baby girl injured after a Jeep crashed into a horse-drawn carriage in Herkimer County on Monday, cops said.

Rebecca Swartzentruber, 31, of Newport, was driving an Amish horse-drawn buggy with a passenger, 1-year-old Mattie Swartzentruber, east on Butler Road in the town of Newport when the accident occurred, said Trooper Jennifer Jiron, a spokeswoman for the state police. The couple are mother and daughter, she said.
