Bad Bunny releases tribute video to Puerto Rico after Trump rally speaker calls it an “island of trash.”

Bad Bunny has released an eight-minute tribute video to his home country of Puerto Rico. He called it “garbage,” alluding to comments made by a speaker at a Donald Trump rally on Sunday, invoking various racist stereotypes and calling Puerto Rico an “island of trash.” Watch Bad Bunny's cinematic love letter to the island on Instagram.

Bad Bunny quickly responded to Sunday's comments made by Tony Hinchcliffe at New York's Madison Square Garden in a scene designed as a comedy set by sharing on social media a clip from Kamala Harris' campaign in which she expressed her outlined plans for Puerto Rico. The video took aim at former President Donald J. Trump's handling of Hurricane Maria during his presidency and followed Bad Bunny's recent protest song “Una Velita,” which discussed the domestic response to the 2017 disaster. A representative for Bad Bunny told CNN that resharing Harris' video does not constitute an endorsement, but he “supports” Harris.

Hinchcliffe, whose comments were criticized by Harris' running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, and other Democrats and even disavowed by the Trump campaign, said he was making a joke that was taken out of context. The context was that he was also playing on racist stereotypes about black and Jewish Americans, and the joke was, in full, “I don't know if you know this, but there's literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now.” Yes. I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”

Bad Bunny's new video features Puerto Rican actor Benicio del Toro, who joins many other Puerto Rican celebrities – such as Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony and Ricky Martin – in condemning the Trump campaign and Hinchcliffe. Additionally, Fat Joe — a Bronx native of Puerto Rican and Cuban descent — specifically praised Puerto Rico during his appearance before the New York Yankees' World Series game last night.
