Student was stabbed at Manor Senior High School, officials said

(This story has been updated to add new information and remove an irrelevant photo.)

Officials said a Manor Senior High School student died after being stabbed by another student on campus Tuesday afternoon. The student's name was not released.

A law enforcement official told the American-Statesman that the altercation involved two adult men and that an 18-year-old was booked into the Travis County Jail on a murder charge. The source said the attacker used a “large knife” in the incident. Investigators are still trying to determine what sparked the violence and are interviewing possible witnesses, the official said. The official did not want to be identified because he is not authorized to speak.

Manor Police Chief Ryan Phipps said the stabbing occurred in a classroom and other students witnessed it and were being questioned. He said he didn't know if there was a class going on.

Austin-Travis County EMS was called to the scene at 12:47 a.m. Tuesday, Capt. Christa Stedman said. She said the student died at the scene at 1:12 p.m

According to a message the district sent to the high school community at 1:26 p.m. Tuesday, the high school closed early and students were picked up before school.

Buses also have started taking students home earlier, said Maritza Gallaga, a spokeswoman for the Manor School District. Students whose parents couldn't pick them up immediately were kept on campus, she said.

Classes are canceled Wednesday for Manor Senior High School at 14832 FM 973 and Manor Early College High School.

Shortly before 4 p.m., police directed traffic as a long line of cars waited to pick up students in a parking lot next to the school stadium as students waited quietly. Some parents who came to pick up their children declined to comment.

Gallaga said more information would be released as it becomes available.

Fatal knife attacks on a student on school grounds are rare. In 2003, 15-year-old Austin student Ortralla Mosley was stabbed to death in an upstairs hallway at Reagan High School (now Northeast) — the only time a student was murdered on an Austin school district campus.
