ALABASTER – The Alabaster City Council approved a grant application for traffic signal improvements on Highway 119 and convened a public hearing for an ordinance requiring water leak repairs during a regular meeting Monday, Oct. 28.

During the meeting, the council approved a resolution authorizing the application of an Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation Improvement Program-II grant to assist with various traffic signal and intersection improvements along Highway 119.

The total cost of the improvement project is $2,832,500, with $2,000,000 coming from ATRIP II funds, including $250,000 from Shelby County and $582,500 from a City contribution Alabaster.

Signal improvements are proposed for the following areas:

  • Highway 119 at Fulton Springs Road – County Road 26
  • Highway 119 at Kent Dairy Road – CR 26
  • Highway 119 at Plaza Circle/Kent Stone Boulevard

  • Highway 119 at 11th Ave. southwest
  • Highway 119 at First Street Southwest

The Alabaster City Council also approved a public hearing for Thursday, Nov. 7, on an ordinance requiring property owners and residents to repair water leaks.

“The real purpose is to protect the health, safety and welfare of Alabaster residents by requiring property owners and residents to repair water leaks as quickly and in a timely manner as possible,” said Council President Sophie Martin. “This is really about conserving water, preventing property damage and protecting our public water supply.”

Additionally, the Alabaster City Council approved a resolution authorizing an agreement with Alabama Power to power and maintain 20 new decorative LED street lights in the Peavine neighborhood at a cost of $240.80 per month.

“This will result in 20 new LED lights in the Peavine subdivision and will really improve the lighting in this area once these are installed,” Martin said. “Council voted unanimously in favor of this resolution, so we look forward to seeing the results.”

Because the next regular meeting falls on Veterans Day, the city rescheduled the next Alabaster City Council meeting for Thursday, November 7, at 6:30 p.m., with a work session scheduled for 5:30 p.m
