UK Healthcare helps patients take control of their health with cooking videos

(LEX 18) – UK Healthcare is helping patients take control of their health through a series of cooking videos.

The videos consist of healthy, easy-to-follow and affordable recipes that can help people with dietary intolerances and restrictions.

“I think with nutritional advice it can become very overwhelming very quickly,” says Lauren Batey, program coordinator for the Food As Health Alliance in the UK.

Batey is also the creator of the cooking videos.

“My target audience would be someone who may be food insecure and has diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease. I think this audience can benefit the most from this type of video,” explains Batey. “The film and video were shot by Jason Parmer, who was absolutely amazing. I'm more of a director and occasional presenter. I am recruiting other dietitians from UK Healthcare and across Lexington to be presenters.”

Lindsay Turner is a heart and lung transplant nutritionist at UK Healthcare.

She saw the videos as an opportunity to reach more patients through the Get Well Network at Good Samaritan, Kentucky Children's and Albert B. Chandler hospitals.

“One patient in particular told me that he never knew food could taste so good without salt,” says Turner. “Another person told me it was so encouraging to see that prescriptions can actually be affordable.”

Batey and Turner tell LEX 18 they are working on creating additional videos focused on children's health and cancer nutrition.

They are also in the process of making magnets to send to patients' homes. It has a QR code that leads directly to the cooking videos and recipes.
