NEW YORK – In the bottom of the first inning of Game 4 of the World Series, Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts chased down a deep foul ball off the bat of Yankees leader Gleyber Torres. Betts jumped into the wall in foul territory and appeared to catch the ball, but a Yankees fan grabbed Betts' glove and attempted to rip the ball out, causing the ball to bounce back onto the field.

The refereeing team immediately and correctly ruled that Torres was out because of fan interference while Betts was chatting with the Yankees fans in the front row. Rule 6.01 states:

If a spectator interferes with a thrown or hit ball, the ball is dead at the time of the interference and the referee must award penalties which he or she deems nullify the interference.

Apparently this was an open and shut case as the player was clearly in the process of making a successful catch when the fan knocked the ball away from him.

They always say that when you go to a baseball game, there's a chance you'll see something you've never seen before. This amusing piece is another in a long line of examples. Of course, we have to be aware of the risk of injury as fans grab and hold on to Betts' hand. Players must feel safe doing their job. However, Betts appears to be uninjured, so we can laugh.
