Lady Gaga battles her inner demons in the “Disease” music video.

In the video for her maximalist pop track, Gaga dances, fights and runs away from monstrous versions of herself

Lady Gaga paired her dark electro-pop track “Disease” with an equally menacing music video on Tuesday night.

The four-and-a-half-minute visual features Gaga wearing macabre versions of herself, including an all-leather Gaga with bloodshot eyes, high heels, a zippered mask and long, steel-studded fingernails. During the chaotic video, set in a quiet suburban neighborhood, the star resists, fights, hugs and runs from her personified fears.

Gaga shared a glimpse into her thought process behind the video on her Instagram Stories on Tuesday. “I think a lot about the relationship I have with my own inner demons,” she wrote. “It has never been easy for me to endure being seduced by chaos and turmoil. It makes me claustrophobic. Illness is about facing that fear, facing myself and my inner darkness, and realizing that sometimes I can't win or escape the parts of myself that scare me.”

She continued: “Dance, transform, run, clean. Always back to myself. Ultimately, this integration is nice for me because it belongs to me and I have learned to deal with it.”

The musician and actress added that she is “the conductor of my own symphony” before concluding: “No matter how scary the question, the answers lie within me.” Essential, inseparable parts of what makes me me. I save myself by moving on. I am my whole person, I am strong and I am ready for the challenge. Happy Halloween.”

“Disease” is the first single from Gaga’s upcoming seventh studio album – dubbed LG7says a press release – and will follow in the 2020s Chromatica. In August she released “Die With a Smile” with Bruno Mars. The duet was a commercial success, debuting at number three on the Billboard Hot 100.
