WWE Champion and Conor McGregor announce upcoming meeting: “See you soon”

The former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion always seemed like the perfect guy for a WWE crossover appearance. McGregor's presence, mic skills and huge fan base make him one of the best prospects of anyone to ever be in MMA.

However, so far it has never happened. I wouldn't overreact, but McGregor recently posted a video of WWE Champion Cody Rhodes and social media personality The Schmo tasting The Notorious' Proper 12 whiskey.

In the post's caption, McGregor wrote, “See you soon.”

My wrestling brain started spinning, and while it's just speculation at this point, you should consider this possibility.

WWE travels to Saudi Arabia on Saturday for the Crown Jewel Premium live event. The event will see Rhodes and World Heavyweight Champion Günther face off, with the winner taking home the inaugural Crown Jewels title.

The Saudis have made it clear that they want every martial arts and professional wrestling event in the region to be a major show. I expect the Crown Jewel show to look more and more like WrestleMania and Summerslam with each passing year.

One of the main concepts that WWE has always used to increase the profile of WrestleMania and Summerslam is to bring in the celebrity element. This approach made its way to Crown Jewel, where Tyson Fury took part in a WWE match against Braun Strowman in 2019.

Fury was reportedly paid $24 million for his performances, which culminated in the Strowman match.

WWE and the UFC, to which McGregor is signed, have done business with the Saudis through events for the Riyadh season. McGregor has a relationship with Turki Alalshikh, having been his guest at several boxing events in Riyadh.

Is it crazy that everyone involved was able to agree to work together and that McGregor was able to take part in Crown Jewel? It's probably a bit far-fetched, but several fans began speculating about the same concept in the comments section of the post. No matter what happens in combat sports or professional wrestling this weekend, nothing would draw more attention at a WWE event than McGregor, especially an event as big as Crown Jewel.

One thing that makes me doubt the theory is the timing of this tease. If WWE planned to have a major celebrity and crossover personality like McGregor at an event, wouldn't they promote it? I can't remember WWE ever using someone like McGregor, Fury, or Floyd Mayweather Jr. without telling fans they would be on the air. So what could it be if it wasn't an appearance on Crown Jewel?

WWE is scheduled to perform at the 3A Arena in Dublin, Ireland on November 3rd. When WWE was in Manchester, Rhodes invited UFC interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall to the ring. Aspinall seemed to enjoy it so much that he said he plans to do a WWE run after his MMA career.

Maybe Rhodes will do something similar with McGregor in Dublin. Although not an on-air appearance, McGregor would go viral in a WWE ring.
