Death toll in Helene, North Carolina exceeds 100

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – The number of deaths in North Carolina attributed to Hurricane Helene has exceeded 100.

As of October 30, 101 deaths have been reported by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. The most recent people killed by Helene were from Rutherford and Henderson counties. DPH officials said both had previous health problems. One person's health deteriorated due to the storm and the other person was unable to get oxygen in the days after Helene's landfall.

The storm made landfall in Florida on September 26 before reaching the Carolinas the next day.

Although weeks have passed since the storm, thousands remain without power and hundreds of roads in western North Carolina are still closed while crews make repairs.
