Nina Dobrev and Shaun White are engaged: “RIP friend, hello fiancé”

Nina Dobrev and Shaun White are taking their relationship to the next level after five years of dating.

The Vampire diaries The 34-year-old star and the 36-year-old former Olympic snowboarder announced they are engaged on Wednesday, sharing photos on social media of White's epic proposal under an arch of white roses.

“RIP friend, hello fiancé,” Dobrev wrote in an Instagram post with a snapshot of a hug in which White sweeps her off her feet. Over on his own page, White shared a photo of himself on one knee and wrote, “She said YES.”

The couple also spoke about their relationship milestone in an interview with fashionin which White revealed that the proposal was a long time coming – he just needed a while to find the perfect moment. To create a surprise, White devised an elaborate plan and hired Dobrev's publicists to send her a fake invitation to a cocktail hour with Anna Wintour.

“He made the invitation look so legitimate,” Dobrev said with a laugh. But instead of attending an intimate evening with the fashion icon, Dobrev walked into the restaurant to find White in a candlelit room with a photographer and hundreds of white roses.

“I was in shock,” Dobrev remembers. “I just froze and stared at him.”

When she finally approached him in the middle, White immediately calmed her nerves. “When she’s nervous, she jokes,” he said. “She says, 'So, wait, Anna's not here?'”

By this point, Dobrev had practically passed out — although she remembers White nailing his proposal speech. “He said all the right things,” the actress recalled. While they initially decided to keep the news within their inner circle, Dobrev has since grown tired of leaving her engagement ring at home, adding, “I don't want to take it off anymore.”

The actress and athlete first sparked dating rumors in 2020 when they were spotted cycling together in Malibu. Two months later, they went Instagram official — courtesy of Dobrev, who gave White a quarantine haircut — and later revealed that their relationship began in 2019 and led to them moving in together at the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

Last year, White hinted at the possibility of a future engagement while speaking to PEOPLE. “We’re just enjoying our time together right now. No pressure,” he told the outlet in May. “But I told her, ‘Look, after the Olympics I finally have the freedom to do anything. And let's just have fun, be together and support each other.'”

White, who retired from competition after the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, added: “But you never know. We’ll see what happens.”
