Despite the relative lack of Pokémon game news in 2024, the franchise still has a chance to unveil its next big release before the end of the year.

Why Pokemon Leaks Revealing Mimikyu's True Identity Are a Big Deal

One of Pokémon's most popular ghost types may not be so scary after all

Mimikyu is a Ghost/Fairy Pokémon that has found great success in competitive battles due to its design, associated lore and Pokedex entries, and status. A key element in Mimikyu's design is the fact that it disguises itself as Pikachu in order to be liked and loved by humans and other Pokémon. This even plays a role in its combat power, as it has the signature ability disguise that ensures that Mimikyu takes no damage on the first attack that hits it, albeit at the cost of 1/8 of its maximum HP.

This concept works great in both gameplay and the overall story of the series. Some Pokedex entries state that its true appearance is unknown, and a scholar who saw it after removing its disguise died after being overwhelmed by terror. However, the latest Teraleak is for Pokémon Games finally revealed Mimikyu's true form under her guise, as posted by Pokémon Leak aggregator Centro Leaks on Twitter. This is thanks to a piece of concept art that shows Mimikyu in various poses, as well as the actual creature underneath the Pikachu-like cloth, which appears to be a shadowy Diglett.

Centro Leaks has stated that images may be removed from the account and instead posted on an archive-like page, linked here.

Mimikyu's disguise and true form explained

Considering that the references to Mimikyu in the game all state that no one knows his true appearance, or at least doesn't confirm that much, it's possible that Game Freak never intended to reveal the true identity of the animal under the cloth. Likewise, there's a chance that this particular piece of concept art isn't necessarily how Mimikyu is imagined within the company without its Cloth, nor might it be what it will look like if another form of this Pokemon is introduced in future games, which does not do this. I don't wear a disguise. Nevertheless, this is the first and only representation of Pokémon Sun and Moonis Mimikyu without his clothes and fans can see what the Pokémon supposedly looks like.

Mimikyu has long been considered one of the cutest Pokémon in the series, although Pokedex entries state that its disguise makes it look scary. As for the creature underneath, if the concept art leaked in the Teraleak is anything to go by, it's hard to see this Pokémon being so terrible that it causes people to die. Instead, its true form also appears to be a cute creature, and the fact that it tries its best to maintain its disguise in order to avoid scaring people and Pokémon and to be accepted is quite telling about the animal's character.
