Billy Corgan's cafe destroyed, mother-in-law injured in car accident

Corgan's wife, Chloe Mendel Corgan, did not share details about the injury but said Madame Zuzus is “closed until further notice.”

Billy Corgan's mother-in-law was injured after a car crashed into the musician's teahouse and performance venue, Madame Zuzu's, in Highland Park, Illinois (a suburb of Chicago) on Wednesday, October 30.

Corgan's wife, Chloe Mendel Corgan, confirmed the accident on Instagram but did not share details about her mother Jenny's injuries. Augustus, the Corgans' son, was also there, Mendel Corgan said, but was “able to jump out of the way and was not hurt.”

Mendel Corgan explained that the car “drove over the curb and into Madame Zuzu's house and crashed through the window.” Video of the crash captured by ABC 7 in Chicago showed the front windows completely destroyed and a small red car covered in shattered glass.

Mendel Corgan said the circumstances of the accident were still under investigation. Highland Park police did not immediately return Rolling Stone'Please comment.

“Our family is grateful for the quick response from Highland Park and Deerfield first responders,” she continued. “Madame Zuzu's remains closed until further notice and we will provide updates as we move forward. Thank you for your support and understanding.”

Corgan opened Madame Zuzu's Back in 2012 and marked the occasion with a short acoustic set of Smashing Pumpkins songs. The café also serves as an event venue, regularly hosting songwriter circles, jam sessions, open mic evenings and other concerts.

“I want it to be an interactive social hub,” Corgan said Rolling Stone when Madame Zuzu's opened. “They try to attract different people from different walks of life. We want a dynamic there. We don’t want a passive space.”
