Bodycam video: Chaotic moments ensue after a Sarasota police officer hits an 8-year-old on a dirt bike

A chaotic scene ensued Monday evening after a Sarasota Police Department officer accidentally hit an 8-year-old who was riding a dirt bike.

The child remains in the hospital Wednesday evening while the Florida Highway Patrol investigates the crash. That's when police released body camera video showing the chaotic moments after the child was hit.

In the video, a dirt bike can be heard driving past as a Sarasota police officer clears the scene of a call around 6:30 p.m. Monday.

“Thirty-six clearance, I’m going back to my signal eight,” the officer is heard saying.

The camera in an officer's parked patrol car captured the 8-year-old on his dirt bike just before he was struck by the officer clearing the crime scene at 23rd Street and Maple Avenue.

“Baby, are you okay?” the officer said as he checked for the child’s pulse.

The police officer who hit the child began giving him CPR while others rushed to his aid. As others began to help, the officer ran, searched for an AED and directed the ambulance to the child.

“Take him to the back, get him to the back,” the officer said as first responders carried the child to the ambulance.

Sarasota Police Chief Rex Troche released a video statement late Wednesday afternoon as the department released the videos.

“The officer was leaving the scene when the child entered the intersection in front of the officer’s vehicle,” Troche said.

The videos are released following questions and concerns from the community.

“We are releasing two videos today, although this crash remains under active investigation,” Troche said.

FHP is working to assist SPD in the accident investigation.

“Without question, in an accident like this, it will be important to collect as much evidence as possible,” said FHP Trooper Ken Watson. “Whether it’s a doorbell ringing, an iPhone, security and of course the officer’s video.”

Officials and soldiers went door to door again, looking for more video footage.

“Everything will fall into place what happened at that point. Our top priority is to make sure the eight-year-old is OK,” Watson said.
