Billy and Tommy, Agatha's fate

SPOILER ALERT: This story includes important plot details from Episodes 8 and 9 of “Agatha All Along,” currently streaming on Disney+.

Agatha Harkness, the witch without a coven, and Billy Maximoff, the son of the Scarlet Witch, reached the end of the witch's road in the two-part finale of “Agatha All Along” – and not much was as it first seemed.

The episodes, titled “Follow Me My Friend / To Glory at the End” and “Maiden Mother Crone,” revealed the truth about how Witch Street came to be, who wrote the ballad that brought it into being, and what really happened to Agatha's fate happened to son Nicholas Scratch. Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) helped Billy (Joe Locke) find his twin brother Tommy, Jennifer (Sasheer Zamata) discovered how her power was bound for 100 years, and Rio Vidal (Aubrey Plaza), aka Lady Death, collected ( almost) all the bodies she wanted.

But almost none of this unfolded at face value. It turns out that Witch Street isn't real, the ballad means nothing, Tommy's whereabouts remain unknown, Jennifer was completely wrong about who was responsible for the binding, and Nicholas' tragic fate had nothing to do with the Darkhold or Mephistopheles. (Probably. More on that later.)

The sleight of hand behind these revelations cleverly evoked a kind of narrative witchcraft and how we expect magic to reveal the truth that lies behind the veil of our expectations. So, some people's expectations. If you're the kind of viewer who enjoys scouring the internet for fan theories – or coming up with your own hypotheses – then you've probably already experienced some, if not all, of the twists in these final episodes. And yet Agatha All Along still dramatized them with so much wit and consideration that it was satisfying rather than disappointing to learn that those theories were correct.

Additionally, the resolutions in this story also raise some interesting questions about the future of Billy, Agatha, Jennifer, and Rio. Here are the most important highlights:

Jennifer discovers that Agatha has tied her up

While stuck in the final trial, Jennifer learns that she was tied up not by a nefarious Boston obstetrician, but accidentally by Agatha as she walked through the city. Outraged, Jennifer immediately grabs a strand of Agatha's hair and performs the escape ritual, which mainly consists of her repeating “You don't hold anything” over and over again in Agatha's face. Once she regains her powers, Jennifer disappears. The next time we see her, she's climbing out of the ground just outside of Westview and flying to places unknown.

Her future within the MCU is uncertain; In the comics, she crosses paths with Doctor Strange, but aside from the 2022 Disney+ special Werewolf by Night, she doesn't come into contact with any other notable MCU characters. But given her affection for Billy – and her seemingly cosmic connection to Agatha – Jennifer could soon resurface.

Billy created Witch Street

Much like Billy's mother Wanda was unwittingly responsible for inventing the sitcom world of “WandaVision” as an escape from her grief, it turns out that Billy was so desperate for a way to find his brother Tommy that he spent the entirety of it Witches summoned 'Road itself. All the details – the Nancy Myers beach house, the Ouija board horror house, the fairytale castle – are drawn from pop culture details found in Billy's immaculately tidy bedroom are. To Billy's horror, this means that the deadly nature of the trials that led to the deaths of Mrs. Hart (Debra Jo Rupp), Alice (Ali Ahn) and Lilia (Patti LuPone) were also his fault.

This presents some intriguing wrinkles for Billy's future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He really is as powerful and dangerous as his mother and the guilt he carries for the deaths of his coven (even if Agatha points this out). she killing Alice and that Lilia chose death) will likely hang over how Billy will use his magic in the future.

Agatha wrote the ballad with her son

The majority of Maiden Mother Crone was spent dramatizing Agatha's life with her son Nicholas in the 1750s. When Rio shows up just as Agatha is about to give birth to him, Agatha pleads for her son's life; Rio says all she can do is offer her more time, but doesn't say how long. Over the next six years, Agatha exploits Nicholas for her scams to steal the life force of other witches, and they write a song together about walking down “the winding road” that eventually becomes the “Street of the Witches” where she begins to become a legend. Finally, that night, Rio takes Nicholas' life due to an unspecified illness (he ends up looking sickly and has a disastrous cough). Agatha is devastated and more willing than ever to manipulate other witches (who are now using the ballad as bait) into taking their power away – another example of “Agatha All Along” doing the “trick” in “magic trick.” “researched.

However, there are still some unanswered questions about Nicholas. When he is born, Agatha notes that she created him “from the ground up” and not by a spell or incantation – but who fathered Nicholas, if he was conceived at all, remains unknown. Likewise, it's unclear whether Rio is acting on his own initiative or at the direction of a more powerful force, such as Mephisto – the Marvel Comics villain who seems to constantly haunt the Maximoff family. Speaking of haunting…

Agatha gives her life to protect Billy – and also to pursue him

In her final confrontation with Rio, Billy volunteers his life to save Agatha's – and Agatha happily accepts, until Billy telepathically asks Agatha if Nicholas died that way. The memory is enough to make Agatha realize that she can save Billy's life in a way she couldn't with Nicholas – since Rio took him away that night, she couldn't even say goodbye. She kisses Rio, falls to the ground and dies.

But – Happy Halloween! – She comes back as a ghost, still unable to cross into the afterlife to face Nicholas. Instead, she returns to Billy, who is not only the son she never had, but also the partner in magic she was never able to keep.

Tommy is alive – but in a terrible life

In “Follow Me My Friend / To Glory at the End”, Agatha helps Billy connect with Tommy's spirit and transfer him to a new body. But unlike Billy, Tommy's new life is harsh: the body he inhabits has drowned in a cruel prank in the swimming pool, and Billy realizes in a panic that “there is no one who loves him!” He has no one!” ( In the comics, Tommy – reincarnated as Tommy Shepherd – actually leads a merciless life before reuniting with Billy.)

At the end of the series, the ghosts Agatha and Billy set out into the world to find Tommy. It's expected that this storyline will be picked up either in the upcoming Vision series with Paul Bettany or sometime between now and the next two Avengers. movies – given that Tommy, aka Speed, is an integral part of the Young Avengers in the comics.
