Today is Diwali and I'm celebrating! Anthony asked me about the meaning of the holiday and how it is celebrated.

Divya: Diwali is the festival of lights. Its origin is partly associated with the Hindu epic Ramayana, in which the deity defeats Ram Asuras (demons). Diwali marks Ram's triumphant homecoming. Every year we celebrate the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.

Divya: It is slightly different in every region in India. When I was growing up, my South Indian family would wake up before sunrise, massage sesame oil into our hair before bathing, put on new clothes, and pray. We then lit lamps, shared sweets and set off fireworks.

Divya: For me there are no binding rules! If your friend is hosting a Diwali get together, just come over to celebrate. For me, Diwali is all about preparing good food and sharing it with your loved ones.

Coconut Burfi is my favorite Diwali dish: Here's what it entails.
