Photos show flash floods that killed at least 95 people in Spain

Desperate rescue efforts were underway across southern and eastern Spain on Thursday after torrential rain led to devastating floods that killed at least 95 people – a toll expected to rise.

Stunning images emerged from Valencia, Spain's third-largest city, showing dozens of cars wedged on top of each other after a wave of mud and debris carried them into the walls of the city's narrow streets.

“Unfortunately there are dead people in some vehicles,” said Transport Minister Óscar Puente.

Meteorologists said areas around the city received a year's worth of rain in just eight hours, triggering the worst natural disaster in the country's modern history.
