Trial of two officers accused of killing Keith Murriel has been delayed

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Criminal proceedings have been delayed in the case of two Jackson police officers charged in connection with the killing of Keith Murriel.

Last year, a grand jury indicted Kenya McCarty, Avery Willis and James Land after Murriel died in their custody.

Body camera footage showed Murriel being verbally abused multiple times and being placed in an unsafe manner in a patrol car. A WLBT analysis of this footage found that Murriel was verbally abused at least 52 times in 16 minutes in an attempt to get him to comply with officers' orders.

McCarty and Willis have been charged with second-degree murder, while Land is charged with manslaughter.

Recently, Hinds County Circuit Judge Winston Kidd agreed to postpone the trials of McCarty and Land due to “unresolved disclosure matters.”

The third officer, Willis, is being tried separately in Judge Adrienne Wooten's courtroom. He was expected to appear in court this month. However, no new orders have been received in his case since the summer.
