Two people were killed and two injured in a crash involving a parked large truck on southbound Highway 101 in Newbury Park Thursday morning, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The incident was reported just before 5:30 a.m. near Wendy Drive, said Officer Ryan Ayers of the CHP Moorpark office.

A black Honda Civic with four people inside that had been traveling at a high rate of speed crashed into the rear of the semitrailer, which was parked on the right shoulder, Ayers said.

The Honda was in the left lane of the Wendy Drive exit but apparently failed to negotiate the curve and continued directly onto the shoulder where the tractor-trailer was parked, the officer said. It was dark at that time.

Two people were thrown from the vehicle, Ayers said.

Ventura County firefighters reported a rollover accident that left one person trapped under the vehicle and a second person ejected, according to radio traffic from the scene.

All four occupants of the Honda were about 19 or 20 years old, Ayers said, and were believed to be from Los Angeles County.

The two men and women who were thrown from the car were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The other two patients were taken by ambulance to Los Robles Regional Medical Center and were expected to survive, Ayers said. Firefighters rescued both from the rubble, he said.

Southbound lanes and highway ramps near the crash site remained open, but southbound traffic was backed up along the route.

Thursday's crash comes after a double fatality Sunday morning on Highway 118 near Rocky Peak Road in Simi Valley, where a woman who crashed her vehicle and veered into the lane was struck by a motorcyclist. Both died.

CHP investigators remained at the scene as of 9 a.m
