High-speed chase ends in head-on crash with patrol car in North Carolina, officials say

YANCEY COUNTY, NC (FOX Carolina) – The Yancey County Sheriff's Office said a Virginia man has been charged after leading officers on a high-speed chase in North Carolina.

According to the sheriff's office, a high-speed chase involving a stolen vehicle from Virginia began and ended in Yancey County on Oct. 28. The pursuit ended when the stolen vehicle collided head-on with a patrol car near Mountain Heritage High School.

After the accident, traffic was temporarily stopped to allow an investigation into the incident, officials said. After about four hours, the highway was fully reopened and normal traffic flow was resumed.

Deputies said 43-year-old Jason Collin Hatcher of Bristol, Virginia was arrested and charged with:

  • Felony: Fleeing/Eluding Arrest with a Motor Vehicle
  • Reckless driving endangers
  • Assault on a government official/employee

Hatcher is currently in custody on a $50,000 bond.
