Ben Stokes: The England captain's home is attacked by a masked gang

England cricket captain Ben Stokes says a masked gang broke into his home – while his wife and two children were there – while he was in Pakistan for the recent Test series.

The 33-year-old said “no physical harm” was caused to his family, but a number of “sentimental” items were taken.

Durham Police confirmed to BBC Sport that an investigation was underway.

Stokes released pictures of the missing items, externalincluding the OBE medal he received in 2020.

“The worst thing about this crime is that it was committed while my wife and two small children were in the house,” he said.

“Fortunately, no one in my family was physically harmed.

“Understandably, however, the experience had an impact on her emotional and mental state.

“All we can think about is how much worse this situation could have been.”

Stokes, who lives in Castle Eden, County Durham, said the incident happened on the evening of October 17.

The following day, England were beaten by Pakistan in the second Test, with Stokes dismissed for 37.

He returned to Britain after the conclusion of the third Test last week, which England lost by nine wickets as Pakistan won the series 2-1.

“I am releasing photos of some of the stolen items – which I hope can be easily identified – in the hope that we can find the people responsible,” Stokes added.
