Houston father Fernando Vega is charged with murdering his young twin daughters

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Fernando Vega is accused of murdering his own newborn daughters.

It was October 2023 when six-week-old twin girls Massail and Mirena were found dead in the family's southeast Houston home on Linden Creek Lane.

According to prosecutors, Vega, 22, was the last person to see the babies alive. Although it took more than a year for this murder charge to be filed, the state is confident it can prove its case.

Vega appeared emotionless as he appeared before the judge Wednesday morning.

Investigators say Vega's premature twin girls died as a result of blunt force trauma. They say the infants had bruises and bruises on their bodies and were malnourished.

The newborns were found dead in October 2023 in the house that Vega had shared with the children's mother. Just last week, Vega was charged with murder. When asked why there was such a long delay, prosecutors said they needed time for a thorough investigation.

“These injuries are quite serious and based on the symptoms and injuries, he was the only person who was in the vicinity of these children, the only person who could possibly have caused these injuries,” said prosecutor Edward Appelbaum.

“He is not guilty, according to the law he is currently innocent,” said defense attorney Mario Madrid. “We still have a long investigation ahead of us and a lot of evidence to examine.”

Vega's bond is set at $3 million.

The mother of these children is also being prosecuted. Angelina Calderon was charged with injury to a child. Prosecutors did not rule out the possibility that her charge could also potentially be upgraded to murder.
