Wichita police are creating a new task force to combat the rise in property crime

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – To combat higher property crime rates, Wichita police have created a new task force focused on reducing crimes such as shoplifting and car break-ins.

WPD emphasizes a “zero tolerance” policy and encourages criminals to be vigilant, especially in high traffic problem areas.

“If you're thinking about taking something that doesn't belong to you, know that we're watching,” said Capt. Casey Slaughter, commander of the newly formed Property Crime Reduction Task Force. He emphasized that while property crimes are not always violent, they leave significant damage.

The task force works with local businesses to combat property damage and retail theft and patrols high crime areas. Slaughter said these crimes impact large corporations, small businesses and the community as a whole.

“Property crimes affect everyone,” Slaughter said.

Since its inception two weeks ago, the task force has already made progress, stopping dozens of crimes and recovering over $600,000 in stolen property.

Chief Joe Sullivan expressed confidence in the task force's potential and sent a message to would-be thieves.

“These numbers are just the beginning as we work to protect our community and local businesses,” Sullivan said. “From now on, you must face all the consequences the law allows if you commit these crimes.”

Despite the progress, WPD continues to urge the community to remain vigilant. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity and to refrain from leaving firearms in vehicles to further enhance safety.
