Carlos Prates: Humility and self-confidence on the way to becoming a UFC star

Earlier this year, that victory was followed by a series of knockouts against Trevin Giles, Charles Radtke and Li Jingliang, which paved the way for him to face Neil Magny – who holds the record for most fights and wins – at UFC APEX on November 9th in welterweight history and is also currently ranked 15th in the division.

In each of his UFC victories, Prates also received Performance of the Night honors and pocketed an additional $150,000. But neither the compliments nor the money can overwhelm him.

“I usually say I’m not impressed with being in the UFC,” Prates said. “I am grateful that life has taken me to the greatest organization in the world, but if that had not happened, I would still be alive and would still be a happy man. I still do the same things and go to the same places.” I still walk around in shorts and flip-flops because the money helps change the lives of the people around me.

“I can’t be a hypocrite and say it doesn’t change my life,” he added. “But I think the main purpose of the money I make is to help everyone who helped me get to where I am. Everyone deserves their piece of the pie, and it’s nice to see the lives of those who believe in and fight for my dream improve.”
