A woman's shocking video highlighting impossible beauty standards is going viral

A woman has quantified beauty standards for women – and the math doesn't add up.

A video posted on TikTok by Heidi Becker (@heidsbecker) went viral after she went through a long list of must-dos and must-haves for women – all of which simply aren't possible in a 24-hour day. Since the video was posted, it has gained widespread traction among other women who feel like they are being held to impossible standards, garnering over 4 million views and 656,400 likes.

“Twenty thousand steps a day, seven days a week… 1,400 maximum calories daily; eight hours of rest every night and eight hours of work every day of the week; Five-to-nine routine before the nine-to-five beat,” Becker said in the video. “Add two evenings a week to socialize, but don’t drink too much alcohol.”

Becker continued, “For your hot girl walks, you need those sneakers and the latest gym clothes to make sure you're hot. For luscious curls, buy these products. To maintain your nutrition, how about these vitamins? Plus, stay energized, get these supplements so you have the energy to complete your routine – to achieve maximum beauty.”

The way Becker went through the list, some people believed it gave actual instructions on how to be “hot” or successful as a woman. Her tone was reminiscent of other influencers sharing their biggest beauty tips. But as Becker continued, her message became clear: She said marketing ensures we are “consumed by what we can consume.” In this “race,” she said, the finish line is getting further and further away.

Newsweek asked @heidsbecker for comment via TikTok.

Viewers in the comments were deeply touched by Becker's words and noticed a similar monologue within themselves.

“The way I started making notes in my head, like 'Mhm, okay, 20,000 steps'… and then it dawned on me as you continued,” @rivasjen wrote.

“This perfectly sums up what goes on in my brain after scrolling for too long,” wrote @god_enthusiast.

“I'm crying on my bedroom floor because I finally heard out loud what was going on in my head at any time,” wrote @maee0319.

Perhaps the most obvious aspect of Becker's rant was the way the numbers didn't add up; how certain things seemed to contradict each other. Some commenters noticed this immediately.

“Restrict your calorie (energy) intake and then buy these supplements to keep you energized,” wrote @itsfackinkate.

“And it all costs so much money, but you have to save money and have a certain amount in your 401k account.” [the time] You’re 30 but life is also short and you have to experience the world,” wrote @eeeeejae.

Most in Becker's comments section agree – modern beauty standards are a beast, and social media feeds them, but some voices are becoming more powerful in their dissent.
