West Rogers Park shooting: What we know about Sidi Muhammad Abdellahi, who was charged with a hate crime after a Jewish man was shot in Chicago

CHICAGO (WLS) – New details are emerging about the suspect in a shooting that injured an Orthodox Jewish man in West Rogers Park.

The 22-year-old suspect, who is not from Chicago, is now charged with a hate crime.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement told ABC7 that Sidi Muhammad Abdellahi is a Mauritanian citizen who was first encountered by U.S. Border Patrol in the country last year. For this reason, federal authorities are now also involved in these investigations.

Chicago police announced new terrorism and hate crime charges against Abdellahi on Thursday. They say evidence on his phone suggested he planned to attack people of the Jewish faith.

Now ICE is involved in the investigation, telling ABC7 it has requested deportation detention for the suspect, meaning the agency must be notified if he is to be released.

“We know he's not from Chicago, but we're continuing to work on identifying addresses, where he lived when he got here… all of those things we're continuing to work on,” said CPD Supt. Larry Snelling.

Abdellahi has not yet appeared in court as he remains in intensive care for injuries sustained in a shootout with police. This shooting occurred just 20 minutes after he allegedly shot a 39-year-old man near North Washtenaw Avenue.

ICE confirmed that Abdellahi was first found by U.S. Border Patrol near San Ysidro, California, in March 2023.

Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx said her team was not prepared to comment on the suspect's immigration status.

“At the next court hearing, as we did two days ago, our intention is to present the offer in full, which will include this level of detail. We will provide this information next week,” Foxx said.

While local authorities continue to cooperate with federal authorities in the investigation, Chicago police do not believe there is a major terrorism threat at play.

“The evidence we have at the moment is that he worked alone. We don’t want anyone out there to be afraid of a network of people who are involved in this activity,” Snelling said.

Abdellahi is due back in court next week pending treatment for his condition in hospital.

Additional federal charges could come into play as the investigation continues.
