Maryland woman found guilty of killing her elderly mother for financial gain

A Maryland woman has been found guilty on all charges, including first-degree murder, in the death of her 71-year-old mother.

The case, which involved gruesome details of dismemberment, left an indelible mark on the local community.

Prosecutor Aisha Braveboy described the verdict as a moment of justice.

“This is a generous, caring, loving, compassionate and understanding woman who was killed and suffocated by her daughter,” Braveboy explained. “Make no mistake, Ms. Candace Craig absolutely committed this crime and will now be held accountable.”

Prosecutors believe Craig's motive was financial. Margaret Craig, who supported her adult children and her daughter's boyfriend through her Social Security and pension, was brutally killed in her home.

During the eight-day trial, jurors reviewed a huge amount of evidence, including over 600 pieces and images depicting the horrific crime scene.

Testimony from Candace Craig's daughters, whom she accused of the crime, as well as troubling forensic evidence helped secure the guilty verdict.

The lead prosecutor, Assistant District Attorney Shauna Coleman, said the case felt particularly personal to her, citing the recent loss of her mother.

“This is not a case we see often,” Braveboy said, adding that the emotional significance of the evidence resonated with the jury.

While Candace Craig awaits sentencing, the victim's family has chosen not to speak publicly, but the impact of this tragic loss is being felt throughout the community.
