'St. The cast of Elmo's Fire will return for the sequel

Rob Lowe teases that there is still plenty of fuel for the St. “Elmo’s Fire” sequel.

The actor said during SiriusXM's “Let's Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa” that the entire cast of the original 1985 film has been confirmed to reprise their respective roles, and that “The Substance” Oscar nominee Demi Moore is particularly instrumental in the revival was.

The feature film, originally directed by late filmmaker Joel Schumacher and co-written by Carl Kurlander, also stars Andrew McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Andie MacDowell and Mare Winningham. MacDowell's daughter Margaret Qualley co-directed The Substance with Moore.

“The Friend”

A possible sequel to “St. “Elmo's Fire” was announced in June 2024 following the release of McCarthy's documentary “Brats,” which revisits the era of the Brat Pack cast.

“We’re very in touch now because we’re actively trying to promote ‘St. “Elmo’s Fire sequel,” Lowe said, referencing his conversations with Moore. “I've been waiting for this [the sequel] for 20 years, 25 years.”

“St. “Elmo's Fire” follows a group of recent college graduates from Georgetown University in Washington, DC as they enter adulthood. According to Lowe, any sequel would be set in modern times and follow what the on-screen friend group has been doing since the '80s.

“It's progressing. “It's moving a little slower than I would have liked, but that's a good thing because we're trying to find the right author and the right story,” Lowe said. “But all the actors, everyone is on board. Everyone is excited.”

Lowe also explained why he thinks “St. “Elmo's Fire” is a timelessly likeable film about growing up.

“I think the reason the film still resonates with people is two things. First, it was a hit in its time because it spoke to where we were all at in our lives. Will we ever have the kind of deep friendships we have after college and into our early twenties? “Is this going to continue in our lives?” Lowe said. “So where do we go now that we're really grown up?” I think the theme of “St. “Elmo's Fire” today is that it's never too late for happiness. And that's because, you know, our kids are out of school and maybe some of us are divorced, all the things that you deal with when you're our age… This is an opportunity to explore these themes with characters to explore people who know, know and love.”

He added: “Instead of just making money, we should just reboot it because people know the title.” I actually think there's a lot to be said about why we're doing it and I'm very excited about it . Hopefully we can do it.”

Lowe previously told Entertainment Tonight that the team “has met with the studio and I've been talking about doing it for about four months.” But it's still very, very, very, very, very early stages. So we’ll see.”
