MDC correctional officer killed in car accident

BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. – A correctional officer at the Metropolitan Detention Center died in a car accident this week, Bernalillo County reported Friday.

The single-car accident occurred Wednesday evening on Shelley Drive SW, near the I-40 access road. Officer Raquel Sachs was killed in the crash. She was only 19 years old.

Sachs graduated from the 252nd MDC Cadet Class on September 6th. About two weeks later she began her service as an officer.

“The Bernalillo County community, including county commissioners, officials, Metropolitan Detention Center staff and the warden's office, extends their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Officer Raquel Sachs,” said Bernalillo County Interim Manager Shirley Ragin. “Our thoughts and prayers are also with the officers of MDC Cadet Class 252 as they mourn this tragic loss.”

Director Kai Smith added that Sachs has already had an impact on the staff and her colleagues in a short period of time. The director said: “MDC has lost more than just a dedicated public servant – it has lost a member of its family.”

The district offers counseling services for affected employees. The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office is investigating the crash.
