MilkTok: Sonoma County-based Straus Family Creamery's sales are skyrocketing after it went viral from San Francisco TikToker

“I never thought I would get off to such a start. It was just so great. “To see what impact that had on Straus too,” she beamed via Zoom on Wednesday afternoon.

Xu's love for cream milk from Petaluma-based Straus Family Creamery first spread online a year and a half ago and has ignited fire in recent weeks.

Her videos of her scooping the cream out of half-gallon glass bottles have been viewed millions of times and sparked a dairy revolution in drinking this type of milk.

ABC7 News headed to Sonoma County to find out what this “cream top” is all about.

The Straus family dairy in Rohnert Park processes 25,000 gallons of milk daily.

From there, the milk either remains as milk or is processed into other products such as cheese, sour cream or ice cream.

As their reusable glass bottles whiz along conveyor belts to be filled, Albert Straus, founder of the dairy, explains how the minimal processing of the product and the lack of homogenization or fat distribution mean that the cream actually rises to the top. This is how Straus has been producing milk since day one.

“I really appreciate (the new attention) and I'm happy when people discover that cream-top milk is good for you!” smiles Straus, wearing Birkenstocks and looking like a farmer from a distance.

The discovery of cream milk by the masses has led to enormous demand. On the West Coast, half-gallon orders of Straus have doubled.

“We get requests from all over the world… it's been fantastic! “I’ve never experienced anything like this before,” says Straus.

Albert hopes his newfound virality…is a chance to share the Straus mission of sustainable organic dairy with the world.

“TikTok and things like that are an opportunity for us to talk about replicating our carbon-neutral dairy model around the world.”

As for Peggy, who ironically has a mild lactose intolerance, she plans to continue sharing her love of ostrich and dairy and even expand it into content that helps other food companies.
