Arteta explains three selection decisions against Newcastle; reveals that a star needs to be “protected.”

Head coach Mikel Arteta has explained his reasons for making three selection decisions for Arsenal's trip to face Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon.

The Gunners After last weekend's 2-2 draw with Liverpool at St James' Park against Newcastle, they will be looking to get back to winning ways in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Arteta He started several fringe players in midweek as Arsenal beat Preston 3-0 to progress in the Carabao Cup. He played against William Saliba after missing the game against Liverpool due to suspension, and the France international returns to the starting XI for his side's trip to Newcastle.

It was feared that Saliba's centre-back partner – Gabriel Magalhaes – would be sidelined for a while following his exit against Liverpool, but he will start against Newcastle.

It's not all good news for Arsenal, however. Ben White is only fit for the bench as Arteta has made one change from the team that played to a 2-2 draw with Liverpool.

Arsenal's starting XI against Newcastle: David Raya; Thomas Partey, William Saliba, Gabriel, Jurrien Timber; Bukayo Saka, Mikel Merino, Declan Rice, Gabriel Martinelli; Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard.

Before the game, Arteta explained why he decided against starting in white against Newcastle.

“Playing these big games in these beautiful stadiums against great opponents – that's what we want,” said Arteta during the game against Newcastle at St. James' Park.

In Arsenal team news, Arteta said: “Gabi [Gabriel] Training yesterday he felt good so he's playing. Willy [Saliba] is back after the ban.

“Ben [White] didn't quite make it as he only had half a session yesterday. It's the third time he's had this [injury] so we have to protect him.”

Arteta also explained what requirements Arsenal must meet to win the Premier League title this season.

“Playing with 11 players is crucial and then the availability of the squad,” Arteta added.

“We did that well last season and then you can challenge it. Then the games are decided by a narrow margin. The team has shown great adaptability and then the moment will decide.”

“It's too early [to judge the title race]. We just focused on ourselves. All the positive things we do and how we can improve.

“We lost momentum against Liverpool. We are a team that is very difficult to play against when we have momentum and conviction.

“We have to show our teeth. When things go against you, you show up. Today is a great opportunity to show that.”
