Crime has fallen in New York City's long-troubled neighborhood: City Hall

Crime along East 14th Street has plummeted — and all it took was one stabbing.

Since an apparent lunatic stabbed three people to death on East 14th Street near Avenue A in June, killing a 38-year-old man and seriously injuring two others, According to Mayor Adams' office, crime in the neighborhood has decreased by more than 57%.

There were six incidents in the 28-day period ending Oct. 13, compared to 14 incidents in the same period in 2023, the data showed.

Overall, crimes, which include murders, burglaries and assaults, have fallen 12.5% ​​so far in 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.

Calls to 911 about the crisis area fell nearly 34% in the 28-day period compared to the same time in 2023, while calls to 311 fell about 44%, the mayor's office said .

“The undeniable progress on 14th Street demonstrates the proven success of our community-focused, multi-agency approach to solving quality of life and public safety issues,” Adams said.

After the stabbing, the city launched a multi-agency effort in August that placed daily NYPD foot posts on East 14th Street to increase trash pickup and step up homeless outreach.
