Southampton 1-0 Everton: Saints score late to claim their first win in the Premier League

At the end of a breathless final at St Mary's, the overwhelming feeling was one of relief.

The home fans finally had something to celebrate after the difficult return to the top flight, which saw the Saints endure their longest winless run since the start of a league season, and manager Martin couldn't hide his joy as he celebrated with his staff at the full-time whistle .

After losing their first four games, Everton remained unbeaten in their last five games at St Mary's after Beto scored a 94th-minute equalizer against Fulham and had rediscovered their ability to get results.

It's an art that Southampton – winless and with just one point from their first nine games – know full well they need to master quickly.

Lauded by Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola after stubbornly sticking to their principles of playing pleasing passing football in last week's 1-0 defeat to the champions, they have crossed the finish line here to get a result they hope for that it can boost their season.

The first 40 minutes were the epitome of Southampton's start to the season as there was no attempt on Pickford's goal despite the team averaging around two thirds of possession.

Everton pressed aggressively as the Saints played persistently out of defense in a first half punctuated by interruptions, and the visitors' direct approach initially seemed more worthwhile, although the Toffees were unable to take advantage of it other than Dwight McNeil Flynn Downes hit the ground in the penalty area.

After Ramsdale ensured he kept a clean sheet, Southampton's belief in attack grew and eventually Armstrong was able to seize his moment – one that could prove hugely significant in the context of his side's season.

The home fans were unable to fully enjoy the remaining minutes but the decision not to allow Beto's late equalizer was applauded as loudly as Armstrong's goal before Southampton ended their 22-game winless run in the top flight.
