The Yankees declined the option on Anthony Rizzo

The Yankees declined their club option on first baseman Anthony Rizzo for 2025, making him a free agent.

Rizzo, who will play his third full season with the Yankees in 2024 after being traded midseason from the Cubs in 2021, played in just 92 games thanks to two serious injuries. He broke his right forearm in a collision in June and was out until September. Then in the final week of the season he broke two fingers on his right hand when he was hit by a pitch.

This season, Rizzo hit .228 with eight home runs and a .636 OPS.

His injury-hit season this year followed the 2023 season in which he was limited to 99 games due to neck and elbow problems and a concussion that ended his season in early August.

The 35-year-old Rizzo, who begins his 15th season in 2025, is a career .261 hitter with 303 home runs and an OPS of .828. However, as of 2020, he is hitting .235 with an OPS of .747.
