Sierra Leone wins the 2024 Breeders' Cup Classic: Live updates, results and reactions

After finding herself at the back of the field on the final turn, Sierra Leone overtook the field on the homestretch to win the 2024 Breeders' Cup Classic.

Derma Sotogake got off to an excellent start and led the race until the first quarter mile. Fierceness, one of the betting favorites and favorite in the Kentucky Derby, eventually overtook Derma Sotogake and led into the final turn.

But out of nowhere, Sierra Leone flew around the right side and not only overtook the field, but also put enough distance between the runners as they reached the finish line, securing victory. He won by 1 1/2 lengths.

After finishing second in the Kentucky Derby, Sierra Leone gets redemption at Del Mar.
