RI motorcyclist dies after accident on Jamestown Bridge – NECN

A motorcyclist died from his injuries Thursday after a high-speed crash on the Jamestown Bridge in Rhode Island.

Rhode Island State Police told Boston NBC10 affiliate WJAR that the victim has been identified as 34-year-old Jonathan Hopkins of South Kingstown, Rhode Island.

Officers responded to Route 138 eastbound around 3:35 p.m. Thursday and discovered a motorcycle and a Ford Transit van were involved in a collision that sent the motorcyclist to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. His death was announced Friday, according to WJAR.

Traffic was backed up for miles following the serious accident, closing all eastbound lanes and one westbound lane on the bridge. Police told drivers to expect delays.

Investigators believe Hopkins was speeding when he weaved in and out of traffic and then crashed into the back of the Ford van in the right lane, WJAR reports.

A 51-year-old New Bedford resident and a 48-year-old passenger who were in the van were not injured in the incident. State police said there were no charges pending against them as of Friday, according to WJAR.
